# Forward Proton Mail to Mermail

> Create a conditional Proton Mail forwarding rule for a Mermail mailbox.

Proton Mail supports forwarding on paid Proton Mail plans. You can add conditions so only selected messages reach Mermail.

## Prerequisites

* A Proton Mail Plus, Proton Unlimited, or other paid Proton Mail plan.
* A Mermail mailbox address.
* Access to Proton Mail account settings.

## Create a forwarding rule

    Sign in to Proton Mail and select **Settings** → **All settings**.

  <Step title="Start a forwarding rule">
    Select **Forward and auto-reply**, then click **Add forwarding rule**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the addresses">
    Select the Proton address to forward from and enter the Mermail mailbox address in **Forward to**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add privacy conditions">
    Click **Add condition** and define the sender, subject, attachment, or other criteria that identify messages safe for Mermail AI.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Send confirmation">
    Save the conditions, click **Send confirmation email**, then approve the request from the message delivered to Mermail.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm activation">
    Return to Proton Mail and verify that the forwarding rule is active.
  </Step>

<Warning>
  Forwarding to a non-Proton address disables end-to-end encryption for mail to and from the Proton address being forwarded. Proton states that this does not affect your other Proton addresses. Consider using a dedicated Proton address for the Mermail workflow.

## Forwarding limitations

* Proton does not re-forward messages that were already forwarded into Proton Mail.
* The destination must accept the confirmation request before forwarding starts.
* Conditional forwarding and account-wide forwarding both require a paid Proton Mail plan.

## Test the setup

Send one new message that matches the conditions and one that does not. Confirm that only the matching message appears in Mermail.

## Stop forwarding

Open **Settings** → **All settings** → **Forward and auto-reply**. Use the rule’s action menu to pause, edit, or delete it.

## Human takeover

If you reply to a forwarded thread directly in Proton Mail, Mermail treats the entire thread as human-managed and permanently stops AI processing for it.

## Troubleshooting

| Problem                             | What to check                                          |
| ----------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Forwarding settings are unavailable | Confirm that the Proton account has a paid Mail plan   |
| The rule remains inactive           | Accept the forwarding request from the Mermail mailbox |
| A forwarded message is skipped      | Proton does not support forwarding chains              |
| Too much mail reaches Mermail       | Add or narrow the forwarding conditions                |
